Because Stopping Is Never an Option: From Wanting to Disappear to Owning My Strength Through Jiu Jitsu

By Charlotte Forster

There was a time when I wanted to disappear.

For years, I believed that being smaller — physically, emotionally, socially — was the goal. Taking up less space felt safer. Strength felt dangerous. My body was not something to celebrate; it was something to control.

Like many women, I learned that shrinking was survival.

Food became the enemy. My reflection became a battleground. Every day was a negotiation between who I was and who I thought I deserved to be.

And then I found movement.

Healing Through Movement: The First Step Toward Strength

Yoga was my introduction to moving with intention rather than punishment. It was the first time I experienced my body as something to inhabit instead of escape.

Through yoga, I began to reconnect with myself. Then came barre, Pilates, and strength training. Each discipline revealed something powerful: my body was capable. It was adaptable. It was strong.

Eventually, movement became my profession. I began teaching others, helping women discover joy and empowerment through physical expression.

But the real transformation was still waiting for me.

From Movement to Martial Arts: Enter Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

When Budokon entered my life, I never imagined it would lead me to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu mat. Through martial arts and functional movement, I was introduced to a new definition of strength.

And then I stepped into the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).

Jiu Jitsu shook me.

It challenged me physically, emotionally, and psychologically. It forced me to confront vulnerability in a way nothing else had. Close contact. Pressure. Being pinned down. Being tested.

For someone who had spent years avoiding closeness and shrinking away from discomfort, this was confronting.

But I stayed.

Learning to Breathe, Learning to Trust

I will never forget rolling with a purple belt who would apply crushing pressure and calmly say, “Breathe, Charlotte. Just breathe.”

That simple reminder became symbolic.

Jiu Jitsu forced me to trust — not only my training partners, but my own body. I had to unlearn the belief that strength was something to fear. I had to redefine power.

Power was no longer about control through restriction.
It became expansion.
Presence.
Boundaries.
Confidence.

Through women’s Jiu Jitsu training, I began to understand that taking up space was not selfish. It was necessary.

Mental Health and Martial Arts: The Deeper Impact of BJJ

There is a growing conversation around mental health and martial arts, especially among women in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Training on the mat teaches:

  • Emotional regulation under pressure

  • Body awareness and resilience

  • Trust within community

  • Self-confidence through skill development

For many women, BJJ is more than a sport. It is therapy in motion. It is empowerment through movement.

I am still early in my journey — just two years into Jiu Jitsu. Most days, I feel like I know nothing. But I can feel something shifting beneath the surface.

My mind is learning techniques.
My body is absorbing confidence.

And that has changed everything.

Women in Jiu Jitsu: Taking Up Space With Confidence

The rise of women in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu mirrors this internal journey. More women are stepping onto the mats than ever before. They are competing, coaching, opening academies, and redefining what strength looks like.

But confidence also requires the right support — including gear designed for performance and representation.

At www.grapposportsusa.com, women’s BJJ gear is not an afterthought. It is engineered with purpose.

We design and manufacture:

  • Women’s rash guards for Jiu Jitsu

  • Female-cut compression wear

  • Custom women’s BJJ uniforms

  • Private label fightwear for academies and brands

  • Durable training apparel built for performance

When women step onto the mats, their gear should move with them — not restrict them. Performance apparel should support strength, not shrink it.

Because representation matters. Fit matters. Confidence matters.

From Disappearing to Becoming

I no longer train to disappear.

I train to become stronger.
To breathe under pressure.
To trust my body.
To take up space unapologetically.

Every time I step onto the mat, I remind myself:

I am here.
I am strong.
I am worthy.

Jiu Jitsu did not erase my struggles. But it gave me tools to face them differently.

A Message to Every Woman Stepping Onto the Mat

If you are reading this, you are still here.

No matter what you are navigating — whether it is body image, self-doubt, anxiety, or simply the fear of starting something new — you are worthy of love. Especially your own.

Maybe that love looks like stepping onto the mats and rolling.
Maybe it looks like dancing.
Maybe it looks like lifting weights.

But find that spark.

Build your life around the parts of your story that make you feel alive.

And if your path leads to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, know this: you deserve gear that supports your strength and a community that honors your growth.
